School Crossing Guard Program

School Crossing Guards have the responsibility of safeguarding children at assigned street crossings prior to and at the conclusion of the school day, within the city limits of Wauchula. It is not the primary responsibility of School Crossing Guards to direct traffic. The primary responsibility of School Crossing Guards is to use safe gaps in traffic, or when necessary, to create safe gaps to help the children cross the streets safely. School Crossing Guards do not direct or expedite the flow of traffic at an intersection; however, if a School Crossing Guard is used as a Traffic Control Officer, he/she must receive certification under the provisions of Florida State Statute (FSS) 316.640.

School Crossing Guards receive training specific to their duties. The training standards and guidelines are set forth by the Florida Department of Transportation. After an initial eight-hour block of training, the School Crossing Guard is assigned to a post. At the post, a certified instructor observes the School Crossing Guard for a period of time for job performance and safety. After completing this phase of training, the School Crossing Guard becomes certified as required by FSS 316.75. School Crossing Guards must be re-certified every year by successfully passing a minimum of a two-hour on-site observation by a certified instructor.
